Our director of peri-operative services, Sharyn Heinzelman, said, “The nursing staff in the GI department is a perfect example of how teamwork influences the patient experience. The staff truly likes working with one another and recognizes exemplary patient care requires teamwork. No task belongs to one person, and everyone is here for the patient."

Last year, our GI unit received the team award at our medical center, which represented effective teamwork in our endoscopy nit. For us, TEAM stands for Togetherness, Effort, Attitude, and Motivation.

Our great team of nurses brings excellence in professionalism, immense knowledge and a comforting environment which demonstrates efficiency in their nursing care. This was demonstrated in our patient satisfaction scores which ranked us in the 99 percentile for the state of Connecticut for most areas of nursing care. On friendliness of nursing care, we received a perfect score of 100 percent.

At our institution we have many ways to reward our nurses. One of the ways is the “WOW" award which means acknowledgment of a coworker for going the extra mile. It is expressed in a thank-you note and gift card to the cafeteria. When the day is stressful, receiving a WOW makes one feel special. It is important for all of us to appreciate how we have helped each other and our patients and families.
