The endoscopy team at Memorial Regional Hospital, in Hollywood, Fla., has am amazing combined endoscopy experience of 196 years!
As a hospital-based unit our patient population includes inpatients and outpatients. The high-acuity level of patients often presents a challenge as our department is a full-service area; the preadmission area receives the patient, performs admission physical assessment, medication history, starts the intravenous line and coordinates the procedure team.
The intra-procedure team consists of the physician, registered nurse, GI assistant and anesthesia provider. Procedures we perform include: upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, Barrx, Bravo procedures, Spirus enteroscopy, bronchoscopy, ERCP, and TEEs.
The commitment to education and evidence-based practice enhances the quality of care the patients receive and promotes physician and patient satisfaction!
We manage the entire process from admission to procedure to discharge of 25 patients per day on average. Until a recent change in staffing, our nurses were 100 percent certified in gastroenterology nursing (CGRN) even though this is not an employment requirement. This extra effort shows the dedication, commitment and caliber of nurses on this team.
Certification is attained after successful completion of a rigorous, comprehensive written examination. Eighty GI-specific contact hours every five years are required to maintain certification.
The team work and camaraderie are unique compared to any other work environment in my 27 years of nursing. Work becomes a second home when you develop the mutual respect, admiration and professionalism that this team has.
This team has earned a highly revered reputation hospital wide of which we are quite proud!
