ENDO ALL STARS

Frisbie Memorial Hospital Endoscopy Team, Frisbie Memorial Hospital, Rochester, N.H.

02/01/2004

The eight-member endoscopy department team of Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H. functions like a welloiled machine. The level of expertise, compassion and caring exhibited by the “Frisbie All Stars” is unmatched within the hospital setting.

In December 2001, Mary Rand, RN, and endo techs Priscille Wentworth and Al Tilbe successfully separated the endoscopy service from the overloaded environment of ambulatory surgery. They went on to create an independent department that has become renowned for its positive, patient-focused environment. “I think one of the things that created the strong bond they have is the fact that they started the department from scratch,” says Nancy Luba, RN, clinical coordinator, OR/endoscopy. “They had to go through that building phase. But there was the common goal and the excitement of a brand new department. They have the autonomy to make of it what they can.”

The team’s ability to collaborate with all departments and all types of providers has paved the way for expansion to an eight-member team providing endoscopy services for approximately 3,000 patients per year.

The concept of teamwork extends beyond the boundaries of the department, as the group has worked to provide hospital wide education concerning endoscopic procedures and technology. A training film was developed in order to prepare other departments for emergent endoscopic procedures.

All eight Frisbie All Stars bring to the group special talents and varied experiences. Together they share a strong interest in the field of endoscopy.

“It all comes down to teamwork,” says Luba. “Other departments within our hospital do not have the same cohesiveness that this group does. Teamwork comes out of having common goals. One of my jobs is making sure everybody knows what the goal is, and what our priorities are. Everyone has input, so they really own the department. There’s an ownership there — everyone has a vested interest in making it work, and takes a lot of pride in it.”
