Endoscopy and Infusion Center Staff

Mercy Medical Center Merced, Merced, Calif.

10/01/2004

In 2002,

the Mercy Medical Center Merced facility merged with a competing hospital, creating a two-hospital campus medical center. The merger required two completely different staffs that had in the past worked as competitors to come together — not only to form one department, but also to consolidate two large outpatient units into one facility, and relocate and maintain an inpatient endoscopy suite at an alternate campus.

The nurses and techs faced the difficult challenge and met the timeline without interrupting services during the transition. Through it all, the team never lost focus or their positive, caring attitudes.

“There seems to be no end to the teamwork and ability of this group,” says Sydney Ayotte, RN, EdD, director of surgical and endoscopy services at Mercy Medical Center Merced. “They love their work, are proud of their reputation and provide safe and comprehensive care and education to their patients. The task of opening a new department has been mastered, and they have moved on, assuming the house-wide responsibility for education and clinical exposure the staff needs in order to obtain conscious sedation competency.”

The large team of RNs and technicians shares responsibilities under the guidance of assistant director Sue Shepherd, RN, who keeps the team focused on service, safety and quality patient-oriented care.

“The staff receives praise from our patients,” says Ayotte, “but we know we’re doing it right because many nurses in the facility ask if there are any openings in our department. They would like to join us in providing our special brand of patient care. Each and every member of our staff working together has made this team ‘star-studded.’”

The West Shore Endoscopy Center
“Central Pennsylvania’s Best”

The West Shore

Endoscopy Center is located in south central Pennsylvania in the community of Camp Hill, a suburb of Harrisburg. Caring for patients from ages 10 to 96, the wellrounded staff includes 28 employees — RNs, LPNs, CRNAs, medical assistants, nursing assistants, receptionists, transcriptionists and billing clerks — all working together to form a cohesive, caring team. Staff potluck lunches and dinners, outside work gatherings, animal rescue activities, and participation in fundraising events such as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation walk are a few of the activities our diverse group participates in.

“One of the most frequent compliments we receive is the friendliness and smiles that greet our patients,” says Marilee Ball, RN, MHA, CGRN. “We’ve even been known to make breakfast for snowstorm patients who braved the weather. Sharing ourselves with patients, both professionally and personally, keeps our delivery of care personal and unique. In fact, two of our employees, an LPN and a CRNA, were patients who loved our care so much they asked for jobs. This speaks volumes about the attitude of the staff and the environment they create.”

While gastrointestinal endoscopy is the primary focus of the facility, the team also performs a variety of other procedures including capsule endoscopy, Remicade infusions and paracentesis. In order to maintain knowledge and skills, the staff actively participates in local, regional and national activities associated with the Society of Gastroeneterological Nurses and Associates (SGNA), and has hosted meetings and served on committees at the state and national level.
