Washington Hospital Health Care Systems Endoscopy Team is located in Fremont, Calif. Washington Hospital is a community hospital, offering a protected, clean, safe environment for patient care. The endoscopy department is no exception to cleanliness with manual washing and sterilization processing of the scopes. “We say ‘sterilization’ because we know not all endoscopy units use Steris,” says Marcia West, RN, staff nurse. “We offer video scope clarity that enables careful visualization for all diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.”
West adds, “We love our jobs because we enjoy each other. We have several workers in our department, enabling us to share the workload and break each other for vacations. There is little burnout as positive attitudes and laughter abound. Our strength is our interrelationships with other departments. We assist when possible with operating room services, outpatient services and recovery room. The RNs in the department are ACLS-certified and able sedation specialists. We perform endoscopy, sclerotherapy, cautery, argon beam, ERCPs (both therapeutic and diagnostic), colonoscopies, stents, enteroscopy and endoscopic ultrasound.”
The department’s five gastroenterologists are experienced and refer to the endo team as “comrades.” West says, “We work to problem-solve each case together. Our administration has been supportive of our requests for equipment even with our current construction expansion of the hospital. We operate as a family and patients recognize this as in their best interest as they become part of the “family” as well.”
