Endo Pioneers Pave the Way for High-Tech

The staff at the Simms Family GI Lab at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenbrook, Ill., are no strangers to technology. They have made a point of embracing electronic medical records and other high-tech developments in medicine, and a donation from a grateful patient has helped them to attain their goals.

“Together, the staff — registered nurses, GI techs, physicians, a unit secretary, and the volunteers at the front desk — have weathered many storms, but through it all, managed to keep their reputation as one of the top twenty GI labs in the country,” says Rosetta Speights, RN, MSA, clinical services director of the lab.

Patient satisfaction scores from Press Ganey speak volumes to their dedication and commitment to delivering the highest standard of safe quality care. “With Michael Goldberg, MD, chief of gastroenterology at the helm, the lab has grown tremendously,” Speights adds. “Sometimes we grew faster than we could recruit and orient new staff. In 2000, we had two patient rooms converted to two procedure rooms, and today we have a new state-of-the-art GI lab with five procedure rooms designed specifically for us. We also were the first GI lab in the country to fully implement an electronic medical record (EMR). The use of EPIC as our EMR has allowed physicians and nurses to easily retrieve information from prior admissions at a click of a mouse.”

Two of the lab’s nurses recently took the SGNA certification exam and are now board-certified gastroenterology nurses. “Our goal is to have an all-certified staff — both RNs and GI techs — within two to three years,” Speights comments. “We are committed to bringing a higher quality of care to our patients, and our commitment to certification and professionalism is important.”

Through it all, she says, the kind words and compliments of the patients have provided the fuel for them to continue their commitment to delivering quality care. “After all, something we did impressed Mr. Simms enough to donate $1 million to our GI lab, which is now called the Simms Family GI Lab in honor of our sponsor. The team has continued to stand together during all these changes, coming in extra to make sure when the relocation occurred that everything was in place and that new workflows were designed for efficiency and ergonomics. The staff are always there and continue to come up with ideas to improve processes and patient care.”

Byrne Medical, Inc., salutes the staff of the gastroenterology unit at the Simms Family GI Lab for their hard work and commitment to exemplary patient care. The team will receive a commemorative plaque in celebration of their EndoNurse All-Star recognition.
