NDO Surgical Presents Favorable Results from Study of GERD Procedure

05/21/2003

MANSFIELD, Mass. -- NDO Surgical Inc. today announced the presentation of favorable multi-center clinical study outcomes in patients treated with the company's endoscopic Plicator System for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The study was presented at the annual Digestive Diseases Week (DDW) conference in Orlando.

In the presentation, Douglas Pleskow, MD, principal investigator, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, revealed that the placement of a single, transmural plication near the gastroesophageal (GE) junction effectively restores the competency of the normal anti-reflux barrier.

Sixty-four patients underwent endoscopic plication in the multi-center study. Procedures were typically performed in 20 minutes or less. Six-months post-procedure, median GERD quality of life symptom scores improved 75 percent with 77 percent of patients discontinuing their reliance on daily proton pump inhibitor therapy.

"The study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of a novel endoscopic plication device for the treatment of patients with symptomatic GERD," says Pleskow. "In this study, a single full-thickness plication placed at the GE junction reduced symptoms, medication use and esophageal acid exposure associated with GERD."

"We are very encouraged by the results, as this new procedure may help patients who are struggling with GERD, and treating themselves daily with medication," says Michael D. Laufer, MD, founder and chief executive officer, NDO Surgical. "This study, taken in conjunction with our ongoing clinical efforts, should help further the awareness and acceptance of this important technology."
