Las Vegas Center's License Suspended After Hepatitis C Outbreak
03/05/2008
Clark County has suspended the business licenses for three clinics with the same owners as the Las Vegas endoscopy center whose unsafe injection practices may have risked the health of 40,000 patients. These patients – all of whom underwent a procedure that incorporated anesthesia – now need to be tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV. To read the county's press release, visit this link.
The Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada lost its city license on Friday, Feb. 29. On March 3, the owners met with officials from the city of Las Vegas to request that the license be reinstated; their appeal was denied. To see the suspension order, visit this link. “The practices at their sister facility require us to take action to protect the public,” County Commission Chairman Rory Reid said. “When dealing with such serious matters, it is best to treat each situation with an abundance of caution to minimize the risk to the public.”
“The alleged practices of this group are troubling and totally unacceptable,” added Commissioner Bruce Woodbury. “It is our responsibility to make sure businesses are operating in a safe and lawful manner and we will take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that they are.”
