Journal: Exercise May Help IBS Patients

09/29/2008

NEW YORK — Exercise may help irritable bowel syndrome (IBS sufferers, as it may relieve constipation and bloating, according to a study published in the September issue of the International Journal of Sports Medicine.

The study found that regular exercise, 30 minutes a day, five days a week, may be an effective way for IBS patients to manage their symptoms.

Furthermore, the study found that providing participants with pragmatic exercise intervention (a program that teaches fitness skills, knowledge and motivation) helps IBS patients work out comfortably. Traditionally, some IBS patients have avoided exercise because of their symptoms.
