One-Third of Uninsured Adults Chronically Ill

One of every three uninsured, working-age Americans has a chronic illness and probably isn’t getting appropriate medical care for it, according to a report in the August 5, 2008, issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

It’s well known that many Americans are without health insurance (an approximate 47 million) but what is less understood is how healthy, or unhealthy, these people are.

The study relied on data from interviews with about 12,500 people 18-64 years old who participated in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES).

The study authors claim that an estimated 11.4 million American adults without insurance have at least one chronic medical condition, such as diabetes, asthma, or hypertension. To read more, click here.
