Redesign of a GI Unit From a Staff Perspective

An increased volume of patients and a new doctor arriving in one year sparked a reorganization plan for our gastroenterology unit. Originally we were a separate operating unit within a 200-bed hospital (Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa) admitting, performing procedures, recovering, and discharging all patients having gastroenterology procedures. We saw a 98-percent increase in patients in 14 years growing from 3,000 procedures per year to 5,800 procedures per year. Remodeling occurred three times in 15 years in two different areas of the hospital. The needs grew to the point that the space was just not large enough to accommodate our GI services department.
