The amount of HIV cases related to the endoscopy-infection debacle centered around three Southern Veterans Affairs clinics is growing.

The newest findings, according to VA officials, the Associated Press and several other news organizations, is that three patients who were exposed to contaminated equipment at Veterans Affairs facilities have tested positive for HIV.

Three clinics contacted a total of more than 10,000 patients, saying they should get tested for infectious diseases because improperly sterilized endoscopy equipment was used on them. The clinics are in Augusta, Ga., Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Miami. So far, one person from each of the clinics has tested positive for HIV.

It is not yet known, and may never be known, whether the patients received their infections from the equipment, or by other means.
