NEW YORK—According to a new study in BMC Gastroenterology, a minority of patients with recurrent mouth sores (aphthous stomatitis) have gluten-sensitive enteropathy, which means it is appropriate to evaluate these patients for celiac disease.

Aphthous stomatitis is a painful open ulcer in the mouth. It can be white, yellow, and surrounded by a bright red area.
